Kalos was founded in 1940 under the name State Typewriter Co. In 1960, Jim Springer purchased the company later to be joined by Al Rimmel in 1961. At that time the company sold and serviced typewriters and copiers. With the change from typewriters to office equipment the company name was changed to State Office Systems, Inc.
The company later opened another division to develop custom management software for pharmacies located in correctional institutions and university health centers. With the opening of this new software division, there became a demand for our company to also provide the Rx labels and forms used in conjunction with the software. This was the beginning of yet another division of the company, the printing services division. Now known as KalosPS, the printing services division has expanded its product offering as technological advances continually affect the printing industry. KalosPS provides consulting and printing services, office supplies (such as toner and ink for office printers), and promotional items, as well as graphic design services.
In 1998, the copier and fax divisions of the company were sold to Pitney Bowes. Jim and Al sold the remaining two divisions of the company, the software development division and the printing services division to Jim’s son, Jim Springer, Jr. The company name was then changed to Kalos, Inc.

Mark joined Kalos, Inc., formerly State Office Systems, as manager of the Business Forms Division in 1987. His strong sales background was in marketing of office equipment and supplies in Wisconsin, as well as data processing in Lawrence, KS.
In 1992, he obtained recognition in the printing industry as a Certified Forms Consultant (CFC). Keeping pace with the monumental changes in the world of document creation and distribution is an ongoing and rewarding challenge! Mark enjoys enduring relationships with his loyal and satisfied customers. His leadership by example in the sales field, as well as his patience and encouragement inspire the rest of the KalosPS team. The strong support and unity that characterize the team is a reflection of Mark’s management.
Outside of KalosPS, Mark is thankful for his wife of 37 years, three children and seven grandchildren. He enjoys country living, canoeing and fishing, dating back to his childhood in the lake country of west central Minnesota. Mark is involved in teaching and music at his church. He is a member of the local chapter of the Gideons and is a mentor for parolees at the Douglas County Jail.
Jaymie was born and raised in the Topeka area. She grew up in a large family as the second child of nine. Before joining the KalosPS team, Jaymie obtained certification as a Character Coach and taught the importance of developing good behavioral habits to elementary-aged children in the public schools in Oklahoma City. She also worked for two years at the Topeka Rescue Mission teaching and caring for preschool-aged homeless children.
Jaymie joined the Kalos team in October 2001. Having no previous background in the printing industry, she learned quickly and enjoyed her demanding, but rewarding new career. She graduated at the top of her class in the School for Printing Specialists which she attended in Chicago, IL in 2002. Her job description at Kalos includes inside sales and service, as well as graphic design. She manages house accounts and supports the rest of the sales staff by providing customer service for each of their accounts. Jaymie’s customer service is in the details, from writing up specifications to get the most competitive prices…to considerations for the most cost-effective way to produce high quality, visually appealing projects through excellent graphic design…to entering orders into production with correct specifications.
Jaymie’s conscientious work ethic as our only inside sales representative has built her a reputation among fellow colleagues and clients that “Jaymie is always in the office”. However, contrary to popular belief, Jaymie does go home at the end of the workday. Away from work, Jaymie and her husband, Casey, enjoy traveling and spending time in the great outdoors. Some of Jaymie's favorite outdoor activities include running and hiking. Jaymie’s faith is a central part of her life and she and Casey are active members at Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka.
Born in Clay Center, and raised in Manhattan, Joe’s roots are set deep in Kansas. Joe left Kansas to attend Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, IA where he obtained his certificate in Biblical Theology. Joe also joined the National Registry of Emergency Medical Professionals through gaining his EMT-B at Washburn University in Topeka, KS. After completing his education in 2002, Joe began his career in the medical industry at Stormont-Vail Regional HealthCare in Topeka. His first professional job was selling Christmas trees in 1995 and, in 2004, he decided to return to a career in sales when he joined the team at Kalos, Inc. Joe’s fun-loving personality and his desire to serve others are an asset to the company and to his loyal customers. Joe’s sense of humor and his willingness to rise to the challenge of finding solutions for his clients makes him an important member of the team. Joe’s responsibilities at Kalos include serving all of Douglas & Franklin counties, as well as a portion of Shawnee county.
2004 was a big year for Joe, which included starting his new career at Kalos and getting married. Joe met his wife, Jessie, through Kansas Bible Camp in Hutchinson, KS, where they continue to volunteer during the summers. Joe and his wife share a passion for serving at summer youth camps and in their local church assembly. Joe and Jessie reside in Topeka with their four sons and one daughter. Joe enjoys spending time with his family, including his parents, 10 siblings and their families.
In addition to his sales career here at Kalos, Joe also has what he calls “a very unprofessional music career” playing his guitar.
Thad has been a member of the Topeka community all of his life. He attended Washburn University and graduated with a degree in Advertising with an emphasis in Electronic Art. Unable to find a job suited to his degree in the tough 2008 economy, Thad found himself working at a local credit union. What was meant to be a temporary job afforded him much success as he quickly worked up the ranks and earned several awards while an employee. In his second year, he was awarded “Member Service Specialist of the Year” and also the “Silver Award” for having the second highest loan volume within the company. Thad enjoyed the credit union mantra of “people helping people” and decided to serve others outside of the banking industry in December 2011 when he joined the Kalos team.
Never one to pass up an opportunity to make others laugh, Thad’s positive and easy-going personality makes it a joy to work with him. Always looking to form meaningful relationships first, rather than “clients”, Thad makes his customers’ best interests a top priority.
Outside of sales, Thad worked in a wide variety of industries from high school through college. He was the champion of smoothies at Juice Stop, the computer wizard at Foster Financial, and the drum professor at Supersonic Music. Thad still enjoys playing his drums whenever the opportunity arises. You can typically find him playing on Sunday mornings at his home church of Topeka Bible Church, although he also plays for several other churches on occasion throughout the week. Thad also mentored high school students as a Topeka Young Life Volunteer from 2004-2008. When at home, Thad enjoys spending time with his dog, Cadence.
